Participant Questions

Question: Do I win a prize for completing the 24-Hour Comic Book Day Challenge?

24-Hour Comic Book Day is an open, free event. There is no national prize, and event details are decided by individual hosts. If you complete a full 24-page comic in 24 hours, you are invited to send your 24-Hour Comic to the national archive hosted by the Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.

As Scott McCloud says, “Do it! It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s mind-altering, it’ll teach you all kinds of cool stuff about yourself and best of all, it’s only one day, so what have you got to lose?”

Question: Can teams of people work on one 24-Hour Comic together?

The original 24-Hour Comic Challenge was issued to individuals and that’s how we want to keep promoting the event — try to create a whole comic start to finish on your own.

But details like these are really up to you and the people who are hosting the 24-Hour Comic Book Day event you are attending.  While we encourage you to take the challenge on your own, you can work with your event host on specific participation requirements.

Nat Gertler, who organized the first 24-Hour Comic Book Day events, had this to say:

If you and a friend do a comic together, that’s not a 24 hour comic. A 24 hour comic is one person’s work, making it more of a marathon effort. But… so what?! If you and a friend want to spend 24 straight hours together collaborating on a comic, great! Do it! In fact, many of the 24 Hour Comics Day event sites have folks working on collaborative comics, as well as other people doing their own thing in an atmosphere of creativity.

Question: What do I do with my 24-Hour Comic when it is completed?

If you complete a 24-page comic in 24 hours, you are invited to send a copy of your comic to the national 24-Hour Comic Book Day archive, which is hosted by the Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum.

The host of your 24-Hour Comic Book Day event will have details and a cover letter to use to send in a copy of your comic, please check with them. Instructions and the cover letter will also be available online.

QUESTION:  24-Hour Comics Day is on the Sabbath and I observe the Sabbath as a holy day. Can I start my comic after sunset on Saturday?

Yes, of course! It is perfectly acceptable to start Saturday night!

We try to keep everyone involved in the 24-Hour Comics Day Challenge in about the same time frame–so their 24 hours could start on Friday and end on Saturday, or start on Saturday and end on Sunday. But we do that simply to consolidate the effort for the event and the attention drawn to the event.

Individual participants (those taking the challenge on their own) are welcome to move that schedule around to the time it would be easiest to complete the challenge. And sometimes host venues run an official 24HCD event on another day, too, due to scheduling or many other issues.
